Indonesian Tsunami
Friday 29th October
On Monday 25th October, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Indonesia. Within ten minutes a tsunami hit the Mentawai islands causing mass destruction. Over 400 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more are still missing.
Baptist World Aid Australia has sent initial funds of AU$10,000 to our partner CFK in Indonesia. They have extensive experience working in disasters including the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and the earthquake in Padang last year.
This money is funding the advanced team who have already left to make their way to the affected islands—a long boat trip from the mainland. This team will be distributing disaster kits including water, food and tarpaulins for shelter. They will also conduct a needs assessment and advise what further action is needed.
As our Emergency Relief fund has allowed us to respond immediately to this disaster, Baptist World Aid Australia is not raising an appeal at this stage. If you would like to make a donation, you can give to top up our Emergency Relief Fund and help provide for any further action that may need to be taken in Indonesia.
